This agreement outlines the terms and conditions for students who use UBuffalo.art to host their web assignments for class, and for students to host their art and design portfolios. By using this service, you agree to the following:
1. Purpose of Service
- The Department of Art provides web space for students in certain classes to host assigned web projects and optionally for maintaining personal portfolio websites once coursework is completed.
- The hosting is intended for academic and professional purposes, specifically to showcase students’ creative, scholarly, and professional work.
2. Student Responsibilities
- Content Management: Students are solely responsible for creating, updating, and maintaining their individual websites.
- Compliance: Students must ensure that all content complies with University at Buffalo policies, including the Student Code of Conduct, IT policies, and applicable laws.
- Appropriate Use: Sites may not contain offensive, discriminatory, harassing, or illegal content, nor may they be used for commercial business outside the scope of professional artistic practice.
- Security: Students are responsible for safeguarding login credentials and maintaining the security of their site.
- Backup: Students are encouraged to back up their work. The Department is not responsible for recovering lost files. In the event of a server failure or the need to delete files because of a security compromise, sites may be removed without warning.
3. Department/University Rights
- Review and Removal: The Department reserves the right to review and remove any content that violates this agreement, University policy, or applicable laws.
- Service Changes: The Department may modify or discontinue the hosting service at any time. Notice will be provided if possible.
- No Guarantee of Continuity: Hosting is a privilege, not a permanent entitlement. Sites may be removed by the Department at any time, while the student is enrolled, or after graduation. Students who wish to maintain their websites after their coursework ends must notify the department and supply a non-edu email address.
4. Student Rights and Responsibilities Regarding Content
- Control: Within these guidelines, students have full editorial control over the design and content of their portfolio.
- Ownership of Content: Students retain copyright and intellectual property rights to the materials they create and post on their portfolio sites.
- Proper Attribution: Students must give clear credit for any work, text, image, media, or code that they did not create. This includes collaborative projects, open-source assets, and any borrowed or adapted material.
- Academic Integrity: Use of others’ work without permission or acknowledgment is prohibited and may be treated as plagiarism or copyright infringement under University policy.
5. Duration of Access
- Hosting access is granted while the student is actively enrolled in the Department of Art.
- After graduation or departure from the program, hosting may continue for a limited grace period (to be determined by the Department) before the site is deactivated. (See “No Guarantee of Continuity” in Section 3.
6. Acknowledgment
By using the Department of Art’s ubuffalo.art hosting service, you acknowledge that:
- You understand your rights and responsibilities under this agreement.
- You accept responsibility for the content and maintenance of your site.
- You understand that you are responsible for properly citing or crediting any work on your portfolio that you did not create, and that failure to do so may result in removal of your site and/or referral under University policies.
- You understand that the Department of Art and the University are not liable for damages, data loss, or issues resulting from your use of the service.
- You understand that if you wish to maintain your site once your coursework ends, you must notify the appropriate person in the Department of Art and supply your non-edu email address.
